    Default New brakes poor.....

Got new pads and disks fitted about 3-4 weeks ago and have driven approx 500 miles since then. The brakes look like they have fully bedded in as the surface of the disks are now free from the original marks. Got them done at local garage and they used Vauxhall parts.

When I got the car back, I had to push the pedal fairly hard before anything happened but I assumed it was due to the fact the brakes were bedding in.

Having driven 500 miles or so since then, the brakes are not much better. They feel dull and not as sharp as they used to be. If I jump on them the car doesn't stop as well as it used to (ABS rarely comes on whereas it used to be fairly frequent if roads were atall slippy).

If I push pedal hard, the brakes are relatively sharp the next time I push them. At rest I can pump the pedal up but it does creep back down but I assume this is normal Diesel creep and I think it's always doesn that.

When I got the car a few years ago, the brakes were amazing (I regularly drive another car so can compare against each other). They stopped the car when still in the "soft" part of the pedal. Now have to push into the "firm" part of pedal travel if that makes sense.

Any thoughts? Could I have burned the brake surface when bedding them in?

    Cheers.
    Ali.

I doubt it if you have burned the brake surface. You might have a different compound on the brake pads compared to the old ones?.

It's possible I guess but I would have thought that if vauxhall changed the components they would actually get better rather than worse? Unless of couse the garage didn't actually fit vaux ones!

Does it sound like they are fully bedded in? I can only go by the look of the discs and certainly all the surface has been in contact with the pads (initially it was only middle 1/4 that was "scored").

Your pads are probably not fully bedded in. IMO See what they're like after 1000 miles. My 314's took longer than I expected to fully bed in.....but it was well worth the wait.

As Ed said, you'd have to have gone a bit mental to have glazed the pads when bedding them in. By 500 miles they should really be well bedded in.

I think I know what the issue may be. Were the pads that were on the car the original pads that came with the car? i.e. the OEM ones. If so, find out exactly what pads they fitted to the car. It's possible that they used the disc/pad which is a set of discs and pads that are called aftermarket pads. Still Vx pads but not the same compound as the OEM ones - and there is a significant difference in feel.

I fitted the aftermarket pads from the disc/pad kit once and was quite surprised how they felt compared to the OEM ones, so OEM ones were quickly fitted and all was good.

So I'd find out what exactly, with part numbers if possible, were fitted by the place.

Called the garage - they confirmed it was definately vx OEM pads (their supplier only listed one type of genuine vx pads). What she did say tho was that Vx get their parts supplied by Mintex or other vendors so potentially they could be different manufacturer than originals.

I think I have the part numbers on the receipt - will dig it out when I get home tonight.

I'm guessing the previous pads were the 2nd set on the car (now 36Kmiles) so it's even possible they weren't vx ones (I just assumed they were).

Car is going back into garage next week so they can check it out.

Pad Compounds are quite hard on the Vectra, even on the lowly models.

I had the problem your having on a Citroen of mine.

They did bed in, but took about 1500 milese to get used to them.

best the stealer check it out though, you never can be too careful when it comes to brakes

Yeah I gather it's something like 2 sets of pads to 1 set of discs.

It's actually a local garage who generally are really good which is why I'm a bit surprised (taken my cars there for 15 years).

I gather the pistons need to be wound back in rather than compressed. Do you think if they compressed them with a G-clamp this would cause a problem like this or does compressing them trash the pistons etc so brakes just won't work (or cylinders leak)?

Rewind for rears, just a straight push back in for the fronts.
