Default new speed two camera system

Trials have now been completed on a new speed two camera system for use in Scotland

The box measures just 4" x 4" x 4" (yes you did read that correctly!) and makes it ideal for fixing to lamposts, roadsigns, overbridges, and other road furniture

The first installation uses a small laser detector and digital live stream video camera
This is then recorded at a remote location
This box faces the front of vehicles

A second camera is located further down the same road however does not have the laser detector but instead has an infra red detector
Again, this box faces the front of vehicles
If a high speed is recorded on the first box then it receives an instruction from the first box to record
Once completed it sends it to the first box and is then transmitted from that box for recording

The time for recording on the second box is based on the average speed for that road
Therefore if the vehicle does not appear on that recording then the vehicle may have slowed down to at or below the speed limit
As a result, the offence recorded on the first recorded on the first camera will be ignored

An application for Home Office approval has been made and it is likely the system will be in operation from Monday 06 April 2009 with the first installations commencing that week
So far three locations have been chosen, which will see the existing GATSO cameras removed

So, just big enough to be mistaken for microwave vehicle flow sensors on traffic lights.

Eventually we'll be crying out for satellite-controlled speed-limiters - there'll be so many of these cameras that it'll be the only way to keep your licence for more than a week.

Perhaps, if we all get banned then there will be less cars on the road.

Its not actually that bad, when you compare it to other speed camera systems!
If you do notice it then you can slow down until you see the second camera
This makes it ideal for junctions with high accident and death records

Look at the number of GATSO cameras placed at or near junctions which may actually increase other types of accidents!

There is some debate by the Speed Camera Partnerships though as the boxes are not very visible, but they have also argued that the SPECS cameras on the A90 and A77 are also not very visible (although the gantries supporting them are!)
The boxes will have to be painted yellow, but even then when facing on coming traffic that makes little difference as the front has a black appearance!

scottishsafetycameras.com is considerably out of date now...
As far as I can ascertain it hasn't been updated at all this year!
However, the partnerships are up to date, although Tayside has a small error today as a location was missing

The system is not yet approved, it was applied for at the end of last month but it is hoped that appoval will be in place by the end of this month

Testing was performed last week and completed yesterday by Grampian Police
Testing was done on the A981 between New Deer and Methlick
Grampian Police have submitted details for eight locations
Tayside Police have submitted details for three locations
Northern Constabulary have submitted details for two locations (which will also be their first ever fixed location speed cameras)
Fife Police are due to submit location details by the end of the week

I predict alot of heavy braking right after the first box! It's bad enough that people randomly stand on the brakes but imagine it on a motorway, askin for trouble in my opinion, but then I am slightly biased :P
