well i cant rename songs that are no longer on my hard drive and cant use i tunes to listen to them either would be much better for drag and drop

As in their on your iPod, it would be impossible to rename anything that isn't on your HD.

thats what i mean the songs are in my ipod and in itunes but not on my hard drive i want to rename a few of the albums that they are in and edit some stuff but i'll need to put them back on my hard drive to do that

what a complete pain that is

Well if their listed in iTunes they are ion your HD. You using XP or Vista?

they are listed in itunes with a little exclamation mark next to them but are definately not on my hard drive and are definately on my ipod this happens with both xp and my new vista

You aint by any chance moved your original iTunes folder at all?

Open iTunes (under XP) go to File/Preferences/Advanced that will tell you the location of the iTunes library.
