I would like to know where that number for best economy has come from too. Is it actual facts, or is it a speed for which the fuel economy figure has been published, and therefore may not actually be the most fuel efficient speed..

Well in theory the most economical speed would be the lowest speed in the highest gear at which the engine is using the least amount of fuel to keep it turning over - ie any lower and it isn't the most efficient, and higher and it's using more fuel to overcome the drag of the car... I shall do some digging to see if I can find any evidence for it,, but in my experience it does seem about right...

A quick google shows it's certainly a well known figure, although it's origins are a bit hazy - something to do with getting the car's official emissions ratings as low as possible for the government tax ratings or something...

The history of publishing fuel economy at that speed is fairly well known, as there were a few speeds given for measures of fuel economy back then.

However, the relavance nowadays is probable limited, as the emissions and fuel economy tests have been updated.

The most fuel efficient speed is going to be around the slowest speed that the fuel system can remain in a closed loop fuelling strategy, for petrol. And lowest speed region where excess air on boost is available for diesel cars. These would be my starting positions, anyway.
