Yes, the old valid one will still cover you until it expires.

If it fails you will be able to drive on the old certificate. Be aware though that if it fails on something particularly dangerous then you could be commiting other offences (such as illegal tyre tread, etc).

Also if you have an MOT within a month of its expiry, the new MOT certificate will start from when your old one runs out.

You technically have a piece of paper that said on the 13th of April 2008 your car passed it's MOT and doesn't need to be tested again for 1 year. However at any point in between it can be unroadworthy and illegal due to a fault. If it failed it would fall into that category. You may have a piece of paper that says you are covered till the 13th April, but if you fail that will do you no good if you are stopped and the Police spot the fault that it failled on.

Anyway, why so pessimistic, it's going to pass isn't it?

Give it a quick check over for any silly little obvious faults, bulbs, tyres etc and if you've looked after it the rest of the year through servicing then you should be alright.

    EDIT:

Can my vehicle have its MOT before the due date?

Yes. Within one month before the MOT certificate expiry date. The new certificate will run for 12 months from that original expiry date. However, if the test is earlier than that one month period, the 12 month certificate period will run from the date of the test.
