Default Consequences of too much engine oil...

My brother, who isn't the most car-minded person, recently bought a Fiat Cinquecento. He was driving it today when the temp warning light came on (it's too basic to actually have a proper guage!) so he topped up the coolant reservoir which was showing quite a low level.

This had no effect so a few miles later he took a look at the oil level which appeared to be low, so he added some... Far too much sadly (about 3 litres too much...)

Immediately he started getting white (possibly blue-greyish) smoke from the exhaust.

I've told him to drain the oil completely and put in the correct amount, but I'm concerned about damage that he may have done.

Anyone got any ideas for me? Is a short spell with too much oil going to cause any major problems?

    Cheers.

with the extra oil will come extra oil pressure which only really needs a few minutes before damage can start to happen most comonly is oil pump valves but anything can be damaged really even worn gaskets being broken.

Hmm, I had a horrible feeling that would be the case...

Any guesses as to what this smoke could be the result of?

Cylinder head gasket blown, allowing water to go where water should not go. You neeed to get a pressure test done, and get your oil checked for signs of water contamination.

Or it was blowing oil into the air intake through the breather. It may clear up once the correct amount of oil is put in the engine.
