    confused Odd ticking noise

So after having my aux belt replaced I now have noticed a new noise. I am 99% sure it was there before too but thought it was the aux belt, I am now not so sure.

Its only audiable at tick over speed, it goes as soon as the rev's climb - even a little. If reved and allowed to drop to idle of its own accord a different sort of "swooshing" noise can be noticed until the revs are at idle and then the ticking starts again.

The tapping could be the hyd tappets I guess but it only seems to be at one end of the engine - can just notice it over the diesel clatter! Its there at any engine temperature. It all seems to be at the cambelt end of the engine too if that helps.

    Its a 2003 3.0cdti with 67k on the clock
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It sounds very similar to a sound I had which turned out to be the water pump which is driven by the aux belt (on the 1.8 anyway). could be a good place to start.

My old 2.0 ECOTEC Cav broke an exhaust manifold stud at the belt end.

I was convinced I had a tappet going, until I spotted it.

Similar tapping at idle, but inaudable as revs rose - worth a thought ?

They were good at doing that. I have had to replace both top and bottom Exhaust studs on the wifes Vectra B. Bit of a pig to do when in situ. But I did manage to drill both of the broken studs out.

hi i have a similar noise which i think is the vacumn pump drive it sounds like a tappet but if i pull the vacumn pump pipe off the noise goes away reconnect it and it comes back so i think it the pump or drive also got a harrsh engine noise at the same time i wonder weather the two are connected in some way

Water pump is actually driven by timing belt, NOT auxilliary belt.
