    Default New Digital Camera

Ok guys (and girls) i'm thinking of investing a wad of cash on a decent new digi camera. Being a bit of an old skool photographer I like my SLR's, had OM1Ns mostly but had some time with a Canon T90 (the wife had one and loved it too) so been thinking about the Canon EOS 350D.

Anyone got/used one? Are they as good as the specs would lead me to believe? I can get a new one with lens kit for a shade over £400, sound like a good deal?

Have a shufty over to www.dpreview.com - you can read a review on that camera there, and how it compares to it's competitors.

If your not tied into any lens system, the Nikon D70 is it's closest rival. Both are very good cameras. For an idea of price, Jessops are selling the 350D with 18-55mm lens for £490 - so £400 sounds a good deal.

Got the EOS 20D, very happy with it. £400 sounds fair.

Chers chaps. Just been reading the review Duncan posted.

Seems to me that it'll do everything I ask of it and probably a ton of stuff i'll never get round to trying! lol

Think this just might be the baby for me.

    Argghhhh....Decisions decisions...

Just been taking a look at the Nikon D50, seems a decent camera too. Turns out the £400 for the Canon was body only not kit form.

So choice now is Nikon D50 @ £433 or Canon EOS 350D @ £490 leaning towards the Nikon at the moment, any thoughts from users of these?

Went through the same dilemma a couple of months ago. Canon EOS 350D or Nikon D50.
After reading loads of reviews I plumped for the Nikon. Glad I did, couldn't be happier with it.
I'd recommend going to a shop to try them out, the canon is much smaller in the hand. Too small for me and it didn't feel that comfortable to use. Nikon is a bit larger and suits me fine. Quality is great too, and menu's are relatively easy to use too.

Cheers for that, I'm leaning towards the Nikon more and more, having BIG hands the slightly larger body will suit me better too, I think. Quality wise, I think Nikkor lenses have always had a slight edge over the Canons too down the years and of the lenses supplied in these kits the Nikkor seems to get better reviews.

As Pacarcher said, your best bet would be to go into a shop and try them both in your hands. Just the size/position of buttons/controls etc. may be the deciding factor for you.

As for the optics, I think there is very little between them TBH. Canon make some absolutely stonking lenses, as do Nikon. I personally feel that Canon has the edge with speed and silence of their autofocus (Nikon now only catching up) and the Image Stabiliser lenses from Canon (I feel) are far superior to Nikon - not to mention more choice. The IS type lens may not be one of your proposed purchases as they are somewhat expensive, but just something to bear in mind?

I'm a Canon person now, after being a Nikon user for many years. That's just a personal thing down to the design of the bodies (I hated the F4 and so never upgraded to them from the F3s I had). You need to handle them both and see what you think.

    My poor Credit Card...

Just been out and bought me new snapper

Went for the Canon EOS 350D in the end, had a fiddle with both. The Nikon was nice and with my big hands was easy to get at the buttons. However, the Canon seems that little bit more solid and the buttons are layed out in a such a way that even my shovels can twiddle away quite happily.

After reading lots of online reviews and listening to Duncan, the Canon just seems to have the edge on quality, with Canon making some superb lenses at the moment.

Soon as the memory card arrives (hopefully tomorrow) i'll give it a good try out and possibly post some of the results and my opinion.

Cheers for the input fellas, much appreciated (but not by the credit card lol).

Nice one. I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 350D from what I've heard/read. What lens did you get with that BTW?

If we ever meet up at any shows (PVS?), I may let you have a go with this 'little' beauty ................

    With a 2x convertor on it becomes a very nice 140-400mm f5.6!
