Default Test drive in your car

So you're trying to sell your motor and a guy turns up (pre-arranged) and, as he's a serious punter and is waving cash at you, wants a test drive. You accompany him whilst driving but after 1/2 an hour, he has a minor shunt in traffic.

Now the insurance question - I guess as the punter is driving, it's his insurance that covers the mishap. But, as like most people on fully comp on their own car, he's only got 3rd party when driving other cars.

So my question is that when you take someone on a test drive, do you demand to see the punter's insurance details (the original paperwork) that says he's fully comp when driving someone elses car or do you just get on with it and chance that nothing will happen to your motor?

I would, or drive him to an industrial park and let him have a go, if he isnt covered and he has a shunt, its your pocket that will feel it

Hand me the cash, then we can go for a test drive. If you dont like the car, I will hand the cash back to you. If you like the car, its yours.

If you crash the car whilst driving it, its your car 'cause I have the cash.

If you dont agree to these terms, then sorry, no test drive. I will take you up the road in the car but you wont be driving.

If the buyer told me he was comprehensively covered to drive other cars, I just wouldn't believe him (unless he had unequivocal proof), as that isn't a level of cover that Joe Public has, and if he's in the motor trade why's he buying privately? I'd expect him to have TP cover for other cars, but would insist on seeing his certificate, as some insurers don't provide that cover anymore, and there's also no guarantee he even has a policy in his own name (being a named driver on his dad's policy wouldn't give him the TP/other cars cover). Then, I'd get him to sign a simple declaration that if he damages my car, he pays for it. If he won't agree to these conditions, then he only gets to sit in the driver's seat, and I'd be diplomatic about that and say we'd both be in trouble if the police pulled us over during the test drive and it turned out he wasn't insured.

I would ask to see proof first before a test drive as he might not be even insured to drive the car in the first place.

Most cars sales companies won’t even allow you to take the car away unless they see proof of insurance, I know some give free 24 hours insurance.

Or get his insurance company to give you a call to prove he can drive your car legally, otherwise he can walk free with you left holding the bill.

Not an answer but having thought about it, my last four cars were all sold without the potential buyer turning the wheel so to speak. A check over to see if things matched the description & that was that sign here please & no come backs, must be my honest smile? ......
