Default Is Your Home Insured? House burned down today.

    No not my house fortunately..

One of my younger brothers children, he's actually in his late thirties, apparently left a chip pan on the stove lunchtime while he stupidly popped out for a few minutes.

Anyway... the whole house has been destroyed, and they have lost everything, all he and his wife and 3 kids have is what clothes they are standing up in. My brother rang earlier to tell me their bad news. Luckily the only casualty was their dog who perished. They live in a council house and their council have given them another house, but of course its totally empty. I asked him if they had contacted the insurance company and he says they didn't have any.... unbelievable!

Hope everyone on here is well insured.

I cannot believe that anyone is silly enough not to have home insurance, especially as it costs peanuts.

OMG, I can't even become to contemplate what they must be going through!!

Glad they all got out okay and nobody was injured - and sorry to hear about the poor dog.

I hate chip pans - never owned one, not even a deep fat fryer thing. Too much of a liability IMO and for the few times we have chips it's either off to the chippy or whack in some oven chips.

Hope they get back on their feet - but it will obviously take a while.

Gee, that's nice! Just think for a second if it was you that had lost all your possessions.

I am so sorry to hear of such sad news, it's ok to comment in hindsight but insurance on the house is a must. I like Duncan just cannot start to think how they all must feel. Lets hope they learn by their mistakes. ......

I checked our Insurance after a guy in work came home to find his house burning down.

He was covered but was way under insured on the contents. He had a nightmare with the insurers as a consequence who basically told him his premiums did not reflect what he was claiming for. Their dog died in the fire too unfortunately.

The cause was the curtains catching fire after being blown towards a scented candle that had been left on the window ledge.

Anyway thank god the family got out in this case too.
