I do not find swearing 'in jest' offensive, but I do where it is used to deliberately cause offence to other people, as has sometimes been the case on here. I agree that to totally ban swearing even in disguised form is the way to go, as not to do so would continue to lower the tone of the site. This site should be used by everyone in an acceptable manner. Nothing gives a worse impression than the unfettered use of verbal obscenity/profanity. IMHO I also think that text speak should also be banned, as, for a native English speaker, there is no good reason for using it on a public forum.
- well that's the word I meant in the first place so it didn't even need starred out.
But yes, a lot of us have been guilty of the odd bypass in the pass, more usually the less offensive words, but with the increase of instances such as words beginning in f, ending in d and **** in between (and other more crude ones as well) becoming more and more prevalent it sends the message to members, and new members, that's it's the 'norm' and perfectly acceptable - hence the stamping out of it by Admin/Mods. It's not something that most members want to see - a post littered with obvious swear words due to bypassing the filter - and as already said not something that members want their kids to see and have to start explaining what certain words are.
Couldn't agree more Duncan.
I too have been guilty of asterisking in the past as I have said previously.
It's a nice forum, so i'm glad steps are being taken to keep it that way.
My goodness, I am really feeling the love today!!
Drat and double drat.
