Play in the steering? Do you have any uneven tyre wear? Turn the wheel to full lock, turn off the engine and pull on the wheel...any wobble? (My cars in the garage right now having new tie rods and track ends fitted)

Jack up the car and give the wheels a good wobble to check for play in the steering rack. It may need new inner track rods (drum sticks).

My car failed its MOT on monday for the very same reason. Took it to kwik fit and got it sorted for £130. (vauxhall wanted £215)
