    Default Clearing fault codes

    Hi GUys,

Anyway to clear a fault code without having access to a fault code reader.

Nope.... unless you use the limp mode re-start technique.... key in ignition press break and trip reset etc... there's a thread on here about it....

I think after a certain amount of starts codes clear yet you need to access the ECU to clear codes straight away....

Its the emissions light that is stuck on after i removed and cleaned the egr valve, also did the change to the swirl valve linkage and cleaned the boost valve! Spanner light came on initially but then went away and now the emissions light is stuck on!

    Seriously considering a ford mondeo!

This is the service light reset procedure, not the fault code/limp mode reset.

yep - after a number of successful restarts without the fault coming back the light will go out (think its 40-odd starts) - or as above a code reader will clear it straight away.

Disconnecting the battery for a bit will get rid of the emissions light. As long as it doesn't come back on again then nothing to worry about.

Hmmm... I thought the light should turn off once the fault has been fixed, even if the code is not cleared...?

You can leave it be. As long as the fault does not re-appear, the lights will go out over the next month of normal driving (something to do with the code being overwritten when a cyclic memory buffer reaches that memory location where the fault was stored. As you drive, the memory keeps getting written to and eventually old data is overwritten with new)

I have just found and registered for this site. I feel somewhat ignorant of the terminology being used but it seems that my problem(s) seem to be identical. I hope that somebody will be patient and explain matters in simple terms or direct me to where I can read up and become more familiar with the terminology. Thanks in anticipation.

I have a diesel SRI bought as a nearly new. About 2 weeks aftre service and first MOT (ie just out of warranty!) yellow spanner came on repeatedly particularly when towing caravan. Switching ignition off and on cleared it. It vanished again for the winter months but on again just before recent service. car was running a bit lumpy and very slow from low revs. The day before the service the yellow engine light appeared though car seemed less lumpy!

Just back from service and MOT and invoice says "engine man light won't reset, fault code P0400 EGR valve. Still seems slow from low revs especially when cold.

If anybody can advide or explain in simple terms, I would be very grateful.

    Cheers

    Dave C

Code points to Egr so i assume its the problem especially with it being slow from low revs, best bet it to either clean the egr valve or replace.
I assume you have a 19cdti SRI your profile says 1995 so i'm guessing that's wrong, there is a how to that explains how to clean the Egr valve and replace
