Vehicle : Insignia VX-line RED Tourer

    Trim : No, over weight!

    Engine : Flux Core Capacitor

    Year : 1 A.D

    Mileage : Rising

    Default Disabled road fund licence.

Since i lost my dad the beginning February, i've been doing all the running around for my mom, taking her shopping, to the bank, doctors etc.

As she's registered disabled, my dad got the disabled road tax on his car.

What i want to know is as i'm now her main source of transport, can i qualify for the disabled road tax ?

If so, how do i go about doing it ?

    Phil.

Is your mother in receipt of the 'Higher Rate' component of Disability Living allowance.

If the answer is yes, then she can get the exception form DLA404 from Disability Benefits Unit, Warbreck House, Blackpool, FY2 0YE .which will entitle you to tax your vehicle for free (one vehicle only)

Merely having a blue badge does not make you elligle for the Disabled Taxation Class, she must receive the above mentioned allowance.

    edit....
Just re-read your post..... noticed your dad had it previously.... so answer is yes, just take the yellow form DLA4004 exception form to the post office, there is allocations on the form for you to tax the vehicle upto 4 times, when its full, ring them for a replacement.
If there is currently disabled tax still on your dads car, that will have to be returned to DVLA, ie. Only one vehicle can benefit from the free tax.

You can also apply on line for disabled tax as long as the exemption date on the form has not expired.

Yep, as was stated, if she is on the higher rate of DLA (Disability Living Allowance) and as long as the vehicle is used for their (the disabled persons) purpose, you can claim on one car only.

    AAMOI David,

I assume the DVLA keep a record of the claiments entitlement to the Motability component of DLA when doing it on line..

Doing it on line would save having to send the exception form back to Blackpool when it gets filled up, or do you still have to make use of the exception form when doing it on line. ?

Always done mine at the PO, so just wondering about this.
    Cheers matey.

There is a reference number on the exemption certificate, when applying on line you type that ref: number in, job done.

My Dad does it for my Mum, I'm of the thinking that whilst the form has not expired it can be used on line even if the four spaces are full, but as you quite rightly say they must keep a check of the entitlement allowance.

Then again if you do it on line you therefore don't need to have the form stamped by the Post Office.

I also believe that these forms were introduced long before the method of applying on line so therefore was a way of keeping track.

    Using the vehicle

To claim exemption from vehicle tax, the vehicle must be registered in your name or registered in the name of someone you nominate to drive for you (a nominee).
The vehicle must only be used for your purposes, for example shopping or getting prescriptions.
If it is being used by the nominee or someone else for their own personal needs, then the exemption will be lost and the normal rate of vehicle tax must be paid.

How to get an exemption certificate

Before you can get a free tax disc, you'll need to apply for an exemption certificate from the agency that issues your benefit. The exemption certificate will show your name and that of the nominee if you have nominated someone to drive for you.
Some vehicles don't need an exemption certificate to tax - see 'invalid carriages' and 'Motability contract hire vehicles' below.
If you claim the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance

Contact the Disability Living Allowance Unit and ask for exemption certificate DLA 404.
Disability Living Allowance Unit, Warbreck House, Warbreck Hill, Blackpool FY2 0YE
    Telephone: 0845 712 3456

It states that the vehicle is only to be used by or for the person with disabilty. Alot of people ignore this rule and get away with it no problem, i have a friend who does this and has had 2 accidents whilst travelling to work and the insurance paid up without query. You could even get a car on motabilty with free insurance and services tyres etc. No modding though. If you can't beat them join them.
