Default National Speed Limit to be Reduced to 50mph

On everything other than m-ways, dual carraigeways, and roads where the local authority has been able to make a case that a road is particularly safe (and how many authorities are going to want to do that???).

Just in case the above wasn't bad enough, the new limits will be enforced by the wider deployment of average speed cameras.

Time to get some placards and organise some demonstrations?

New research by the Department for Transport has found that reducing the speed limit could save 200-250 lives a year and also reduce carbon emissions.

so whats your argument against ?

Sounds a very good idea to me.

I'm certainly all for more speed camera's, especially the newer specs average speed camera's. We should not need any at all, but with the new breed of uncaring, impatient, arrogant, and dangerous drivers who seem to think the law does not apply to them, sadly it is very necessary.
Some drivers simply lack common sense, many rural roads simply are not safe at 60mph, I have seen 2 cars overturned in hedgrows in the Hereford area within the last 2 days near bends etc. where I feel sure speed was a major factor, ie. stupid unsafe driving, instead of driving safely for the conditions.

We also need to drastically increase the penalties for all types of crime, and I mean severe harse punishment. In that respect however it appears this government are totally inept and pathetic.

it still wont reduce road deaths, as many are caused by drivers taking the p1$$ at stupid speeds. there is nothing wrong with the current national speed limit. Like i said its just another scheme to make the government more money!

before i bought the signum i had a 2.5 V6 and went every where at 80/90 i now do the limit 60/70 and my driving style has changed. when i first got the signum i got 450 miles out of a tank now I'm close to getting 600 I'm saving loads on fuel and getting two day extra driving out of the same tank. yes i have to leave 10 minutes earlier and probably get home later. but i am feeling more relaxed about driving on a motorway I'm not out in the fast lane watching the idiot speed up slow down. how many rear shunts have you seen in the slow lane ?
i am also on 9 points from my old driving style and i drive for a living. as does every one here ! you all need your cars for work. but i just cant loose my licence just because i want to stamp my feet and drive over the limit. yes we all have nice cars and now and then put our foot down and have a play. but when it comes at the cost of a life. na i feel better doing this now never go back to rushing around like a numpty

then bring more cameras on the road and get the pi$$ takers off. those that want to fund the cameras are the ones who will suffer by it
