Default Noise from rear - strange remedy

    Hi all

I have just bought a 06 vectra c estate 1.8. And I have enjoyed reading about future problems on this forum for a while .
The thing is that I have a annoying noise coming from the rear when hitting bumps etc. The sound is best described as a bouncing parcelshelf something of that kind. Ive owned bothe a vec a and B previously, so Im kind of familiar with troubleshooting strange sounds
I have read all the post on the subject, but here is the strange thing: It disappears when i wash the car.. I know it sounds like a bad joke, but its not. The first time I thought it was a coincidence, but its not. After i have hosed the car in one of those DIY washing places the car is perfectly silent. I really started to dubt my judgement (and hearing). Does anybody with developed logical sence point me in the right direction on what to look for ? I have checked the boot for any loose objects that theoretically could have been "pushed" into place by the waterjet, but no luck. Sorry for the long post, but this noise is driving me nuts.

    any advice appreciated

I had a noise coming from the back which took me ages to figure out!! Turned out to be a loose radio aerial, a quick half a turn and noise gone!!

Maybe the water is lubing something when you wash it and stopping the noise, have you tried treating your aperture seal with some Vinyl and Rubber Care? Or even Vaseline?

I was thinking the same the water is acting as a lubricant. Next time you wash it look to see where the water has "splashed". it might indicate where the knocking is coming from. Thing is I would have thought a knock would still be there even when the offending part had been lubricated. A squeak I can understand that disapearing though.

Thanks for all the replies.. I see the "lubricant theory", but that would imply that the same effect would be achieved under wet/damp conditions ?And that makes no difference.. however, Today I hosed only the back of the car not touching anything underneath or the wheelarches to try to eliminate the bushes. Just a quick hosedown from the rear (the gasstation people probably thought something was wrong with me The noise disappeard as before. Obviously its something with the rear hatch, but I have checked all parts (not that there really are many possible parts that could be influenced by water under pressure as far as I can understand)..?) and I can not see anything that is loose. I even removed the rear licensplate to be sure.. BigP: This apperture seal you mention - where is it actually located ?. Im afraid thats one word I missed in my elementary school english class- sry. for the ignorence.. Greetings from Snowy Norway

    Hi
I have just fixed a similar prob on my 52 plate 2.2 SRI, I had a thud when going over rough roads which could of been described as the parcel shelf thudding. After changing all the recommended shocks springs anti roll bar bushes I found that the fuel tank shield was slapping the underbelly of the tank. I put some packing between the tank and shield and the noise has gone away, happy days.
    regards
    Tony

Hmmmmm.. ive been watching this with great interest .. i have the very same noise !

On a previous car i actually traced it to the parcel shelf so added pads to stop the jumping etc ! thats exactly what this sounds like as mentioned but ..... looking above i suspect its way more than that .

Ill try a couple of things as said above ... keep you posted

    cheers
