Egr gaskets. Urgent help required

Sorry to bother you guys, thought I'd give the EGR a clean before handing my vec-c over to its new owner, as its been a little sluggish lately. No fault codes were showing on the code reader so dealer would probably not want to know.

Anyway... I've cleaned it all up no problem, when I removed it I was careful to ensure I did'nt drop any gaskets, such as the oval metal one that fits over the pipe that comes up from underneath.

Right... when I came to refit, I've noticed a second oval metal gasket lying below in the engine.

Car is a 56 plate Vec-C , I dont think I dropped one, so my question is how many of those metal gaskets should there be 1 or 2 ?

I'm wondering if the gasket found sitting below amidst the engine is one the mechanic dropped when they fitted a new EGR early last year, or of course I did indeed drop one.

So, how many gaskets should there be. ? 1 or 2 ?

Have looked in the how-2 and Haynes manual but it does not mention the gaskets..

Awaiting to put it back together so a quickish reply would be mucho appreciated.

To answer my own question..

A phone call to dealer reveals there is indeed just the one metal gasket.

The mechanic must have dropped one into the engine when they last fitted a new EGR valve.
Confuses you a bit when you spot a second one sitting below... lol

Just took it for test drive, and the difference it's made cleaning the EGR valve you would not believe. It was not too badly gummed up, solenoid was nice and free with no muck at all. The valve actuating plunger also seemed quite free, but I gave it a good clean with Wyns carb cleaner, also around both valves. I did notice however that there was loads of crap in the inlet itself, where it bolts to the engine, so it looks to me like the mechanic never cleaned that out when they fitted a new EGR about 15k back, reducing the size by a good third its size.
I dried the whole lot off with a wash with isopropol, as I figured any lubrication in there would cause it to gum up faster.

Certainly bought that oooph back when accelerating. A good clean tomorrow and its ready to go. Hope the guy who uses it will be as pleased with it as I have been. Should be, its like new.

It was just sat amidst the engine directly underneath the EGR, a bit to the right, and you are right, I'm a surprised I didn't notice it before.

I had read on here where someone had droped the aluminum gasket and and couldn't find it, so I was extra careful when I removed the 2 clamping bolts that I would not drop it..lol. when I saw this second one sitting there below in the engine afterwards, it made me start to think that maybe they had fitted 2.

I rang a main VX dealer parts dept, and they stated that there is only one fitted to the pipe coming up from underneath. So its must have been there since the last EGR was fitted, it does make you think though..lol

I'd still like confirmation from someone on here who has done their EGR just to be 100% sure. If only for peace of mind.

Yes only 1 on the pipe and a rectangular one against the manifold. It makes a hell of a difference to the drive...
