Default Spanner Light, No Code, Poor MPG - WHY?

As my title states I am getting a spanner light appearing and when I try and read the code via a U581 there isnt one. I reset it and after one run its back. WHAT IS IT??

The car seems to run ok but I have poorer MPG and maybe have lost a bit of umph!

    Please help

Hi mate as spenny said check your vacuum hoses around the connectors for split,s
very common fault .also check your turbo feed hoses for splits , just get some one to rev your engine while you listen under bonnet .

Thanks for the tips on checking my pipes....

As a complete novice who hasnt touched cars for years is there an idiots guide/photo anywhere around showing me which pipes to check.

I know this is a stupid question but it will save me lots of head stratching!

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Well hopefully sorted it!!

As it was light last night when I got home from work and decided to lift the bonnet and have a look......

starting at the airbox....Mmmm hose disconnected, it was the one on the front of the air box that connects to the radiator, it was completely off on the airbox side.

I have now pushed it back on and reset the EML and all seems good on the drive to work and no reappearance of the EML light

My question is - is that pipe really only a push fit connection on both ends???

    confused

    Mmmm not sorted it!

At the weekend I cable tied the hose at the front of the air box on and I did the airbox mod by removing the plastic bit. I then reset the EML spanner light and all sorted - WRONG!

Around 100 miles later the spanner light came on.

I am beginning to think this hose is a red herring - I have looked and all the hose seem ok and now the car runs fine - mpg might still be low though.

Any ideas now - I just hate having a spanner light and no error code on my U581 reader - where can I get an error code????

Please help this very frustrated Veccy owner
