Default Private Plate and selling car?

Hi guys, after a bit of advice

If I'm looking to sell my car and it has a private plate on it, which is the best way to get it off pre-sale?

Should I take the docs into the local DVLA office (just around the corner from work) and wait/hope to get them back within a reasonable timeframe (upto 6 weeks apparently) in the meantime have no logbook to show a potential buyer, or should I wait until I find a buyer and do it then when the V5 has to go back anyway?

    Cheers

That would be the correct way!

The other way is to sell your car and go to the DVLA with the buyer.. thats what i did one time! I met the guy in the DVLA office car park! Sold the car there and then, he came in with me while i signed over the docs. They allowed me to keep the back page so i could give him is temporary log. The rest was done on trust that when i recieved the log book i would sign it over to him!

The most recent time, i sold the car through the club! So the guy knew me and it was on trust. I kept the log book and the rights to the plate. Once DVLA had processed it i recieved a new log book and filled it out with his details, the posted it to him along with new MOT & TAX disc as supplied by DVLA.

What i did in both cases, so as cover my arse, i did a reciept for sold as seen, with time a date on it.. just incase he got caught speeding etc!

The vectra I've just bought had a private plate on it. The seller went along to his nearest DVLA office on the monday morning and his new plates, tax disk and V5 arrived that Friday so only took 5 working days, not 6 weeks. Maybe a bit busier down south but surely not 6 weeks.

Agreed! Everytime ive done it its taken 5 days max! I know for a fact, if you have the log book and the rentention certificate, go into your local DVLA office, and its instant! Essentially driving in with one plate, and out with the other! Well, officially you get 48hours overlap, but upto 1 week is safe!
