    Unhappy 1.9 CDTi 150 problems - egr/lambda/swirls?

    Hello.

    Anyone want to have a stab at diagnosing the most likely fault from the following for me?

    Vectra 1.9 CDTi (150) Elite-04 plate, 120,000 miles

    A week ago I started the car up and it appeared to be running in low power mode (limp home). No warning lights. I drove it a short distance and the "car and spanner" light came on, although simultaneously the performance improved slightly. Parked it up, came back to it 4 hours later, and it appeared to be fine again - no lights, driving normally.

    Fine for the next 2 days on a number of drives, and then Weds morning the same issue - limp home but no warning light. Again drove it a short journey and parked up. Came back to it 2 hours later and seemed all fine.

    Fine again the next few days. Drove it yesterday and same issue, this time the car and spanner came on again after about 10 miles driving in low power. Tried switching ignition on and off a few times, made no difference. Had to drive it to work anyway, parked it up for the day.

    Returned to it in the evening and started it. This time no "car and spanner", but the emissions control light is now lit and has stayed on ever since. The car seems to be running fine again.

    I have booked it into Vx to read codes at the end of the week, but just after some best guesses so I can go armed with a bit of knowledge, and also to lessen the shock when they quote me a price....

    I have considered lambda sensor, egr, and swirls based on the info on this forum - do you think the symptoms above make any of those likely/unlikely? Anything else (cheaper? ) it could be? I just find it weird that in between episodes the car seems to be fine....

    The only other symptom I guess is smokey on start-up, but its been this way ever since I owned it. It was serviced 3000 miles ago and has just had a new cam belt.

    What's the likely cost for the above problems, and what would you expect to pay if I shopped around a bit?

    Same problem with my V6CDTi. It reads EGR problem code P0400 or P0409.

    Sounds like the same issue that I am having and a few others

    Hard to say without the fault codes.

    Be interesting to see what Vauxhall say. (and how much they are going to charge you)

    If it helps this post is what I have tried so far. A few of the things are simple and have helped a few people so worth a try if not under warrenty.

    Hello.

    Thanks for the replies. I would rather it was EGR than swirls, I guess :P

    Will let you know the result once Vx have screwed around with a bit.

    Well, it's in the garage to be looked at. Not the most convincing set of people, I felt....

    For those interested, Vx have just called and say the fault codes point to the EGR, which they are going to replace tomorrow. £236 including the Tech 2 diagnosis.
