    Default Alloys....Irrepairable

OK, my old mans vectra, the 2 rear alloys have some sorta stains on them, photos below - this is the state of them after he washed them. Can only guess its brake dust, only its like burnt/ingrained on, as when you run your fingers over the discoloured areas then onto the fine looking areas there isnt a change in texture.

    so:
    1. whats causing it?
    2. how do we get it off?
    3. how can we prevent it happening again,

btw, the front alloys are immaculate, look like new.

    photos:

    cheers

Have you had the car from new matey? I would guess that the wheels have no laquer on them.

Have you tried some very fine wet or dry?

An acidic alloy cleaner may get it off though, just don't keep using it.

like already said - use an acidic cleaner with plenty of elbow grease - and rinse thoroughly. after that put polish on and wash reqularly using a non acidic cleaner and reapply the polish / wax such as autoglym.

Mind you I do try to treat the wheels with the same respect I do for the car paint, and wash with non acidic soap. and polish regularly, even if I don,t have time foe washing the car I do tend to wash the wheels. some one sugested to put a sealent on the wheels then polish them, something I will try next.

Hi, I've had this happen a number of times, my own theory is that after the discs start to wear the pad is shaving micro filings and that is what the resulting gold effect is, in the past I've resorted to using a rough washing up pad to remove it, it does the job but does take the laquer with it, and after a few more miles the gold returns, run your finger along the top of the disc to see if the discs are worn, anything more than a slight groove and I'd say i'm right about the cause, if you want them top notch then you will have to replace the discs and have the wheels refurb'd, I dont think it's pads or pad quality as I use GM all the time, but i do notice as the original discs get to 50k it starts to happen, that or the laquer has burnt off by then leaving it unprotected, cheap fix is clean em as I said and spray them in, beware it's only a temp fix.

Try Wonder Wheels 1st though, never know.
