I would guess 40k but could be 60k if its a belt. Ford would be able to tell you.

No, a belt cannot be changed for a chain
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Cheers - Not sure if my 08 1.8i is belt or chain. Quite a while befor ei need to bother with it but wasnt sure if the cogs could be fitted from a chain as they are supposed to be more reliable but nevermind

Yours will be a belt. The chain isn't more reliable as long as you change the belt when it needs to be done. The belt is quieter than a chain, but it has the added cost of replacement
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

There's a few engines that you can change belts to chains or indeed a full gear system, one that comes to mind is Land-Rover's 200TDi - the gear system is popular with those. It's noisy, but no further problems with belts breaking, or clogging up with mud and gunge when deep wading.

seems strange cos it looks as if theres no plastic cambelt cover? as the vx di + dti looks with a chain driven engine, was interested as my friend is selling his w rg fiesta 70k for £700 (dont know the history + he wants answer sharpish)very clean. thought it would do the good lady to wiz round in.

The Di/DTi are indeed chain driven.

I'm just thinking, that looks like the old Lynx based 1.8D same as the Escort. Sometimes known as Endura-D. They have a timing belt but it's low in the engine, the cam runs off the pump, which is in turn run off the crank, both belts.

Edit: Here's all the details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Endura-D_engine
