Default Vectra 1.9 CDTI [150] performance issues

    Hi everyone.

I have, like a lot of people been having running issues with my Vecrta 1.9 [150] (05 plate 43k, owed since new) recently so I decided to start a new thread to try and provide others with links to what I have tried so with may be at the same time trying to resolve my own issue.

It all started about a month age when there would be to odd jerk or miss from the engine while accelerating or coasting up to a round a bout. This escalated into a performance or lack of power problem below 2000 -3000 revs. Above this the engine ran fine. Below this it feels as though the engine is being restricted hugely in some way as though it is being suffocated.

This then turned into a intermittent problem happening on the odd day & then running fine. Finally the "spanner" light came on and the engine management light so I took it to the local backstreet to diagnose the faults by the ODBII. It had a error code of P2279 but as it could be a number of things the local garage reset the lights and suggested that I wait until it gets worse and breaks to avoid wasting money.

After reading a few fantastic threads on here I have tried the following so far.

    1) STP injector cleaner in a fresh tank of fuel. (tried this early on before it got worse)

    2) Stripped, cleaned & re assembled the EGR following a handy How to Here. ( if you can wire a house hold plug you can attempt this too)

    3) Check my swirl valve was fitted correctly. Link

    4) Bought the 3rd injector wiring Mod "field fix kit p/n 93189918" (unable to fit this as I require Instructions) see Link

    5) Stripped, cleaned and assemble the Air box and carried out the bottom box "Mod". Link

    My questions are:-

    a) What else can I try to fit / clean or replace myself?

    b) Some where it was mentioned that you could clean the DPF as it may get sooted up? Is this easy? Where is it located, instructions please.

    c) Can someone provide me with instructions on "How 2" fit the 3rd injector wiring Mod "field fix kit p/n 93189918" ?

    d) When I checked the swirl valve they were connected but seemed a little loose.. rocky (forwards and backwards) is this normal play?

    e) Is there a comprehensive list of all the error codes anywhere?

I have also ordered a ODB II reader so I can trouble shoot and reset my own codes in the future from ebay. link VX want £64 a time...!

Thanks to all the people that have posted How 2's and to all the knowledgably people out there that makes this forum so useful.

Thank also, in advance to all the lovely people that are going to reply to this thread and help me resolve my issue.

    Cheers

    Keith.

is it smoking more than usual ? could be swirl valve stuck open / closed. If it does smoke more at low revs = stuck open, at high revs = stuck shut.

Also sounds like EGR valve to me. did you clean it with carb cleaner and do the pipe and manifold as far as you could ?

    Default Performance issues

No not smoking, and like I said swirl valve looks to be functioning ok just a little play in it.

EGR has been fully cleaned see the Photos in this Link towards the bottom of the page.

Wow keith, you did a great job on EGR, and used the wife's toothbrush I see. They smoke if swirl valve stuck so rule that out. Did you operate the EGR valve by hand and clean it in the open position as well ? Thats all I can think of. Your list of jobs done covers everything else.

    Default EGR cleaning

Yep I cleaned the Valve in the open position aswell as I could. It only opened about 3-4mm is that Normal? Pushes up about 3-4mm and then self springs back, does that sound about right?

Have you ever replaced the 3rd injector wiring mod?

Or Know the location of the DPF, or any error codes?

Just to add to my list of questions.

If the spanner light comes on when you turn on the ignition and goes off after starting and the engine management light is on when started do these need to be reset before the engine will run correctly even after cleaning the EGR?

I have order a ODB reader but havent got it yet.

Would like to know this myself as well as I checked mine today, and although they are very clean looking, they have play similar to what Keith has mentioned.

A closer inspection today, confirms my first thoughts that these should have some play in them.

Get a friend to start the car up the valves should sit on the left and all move clockwise to the right at the same time once the engine is running. When the engine is turned off they should all move back to the left. (anti clockwise motion).

It's my understanding that there would also be smoke if this was an issue but I have no smoke when running fast or slow.

    Default Boost sensor location

A quick update / advice required.

    Still having the "issues".

Next step I'm going to try cleaning the Boost Sensor?

I have seen on various threads that this is next to the EGR. Is this it? the blue switch thing?

    The blue Switch?

    Close up below.

Going to change the 3rd injector connector and wires on the weekend.

Also need to know the location of the DPF on a Vectra-C [150] if it has one so i can try strip clean and re assembling. Photos would help!

    Thanks in advance.
