Default 1.9 120 cdti turns but won't start

the car turns over and has fuel to the injectors, verified by removing the return pipe.
i've borrowed a scan tool (uiftech u480) but it won't communicate so i assume its too old to talk to the CAN system properly, it hangs on the read screen.
engine icon light is on but spanner is not.
can anyone suggest what i should check as i'm frustrated as hell
    thanks

had a thought here.. that reader should work... so maybe a engine ECU fault? Get someone to try another reader or tech2 to see if they can communicate with engine ECU..

Possibly just bad connection to ECU from loom.

took it to the stealer this morning. apparently it hadn't been in to have the handbrake recall done so they were happy to have it straight away.

bad news, the high pressure pump has failed, going to cost £1000 to supply and fit, including all the time spent on diagnostics.
i could get a remanufactured pump but i can't fit it myself and i'd have to pay to move the car elsewhere.
i've decided to pay the stealer to do the work, at least it will be fully warranted and if it so much as coughs i will take it back.
now i remember why i hate diesels so much.

No doubt about it,diesels are a hell of a lot more complicated than they used to be.

Did you have a tuning box/remap fitted or was it standard ?

the car is standard, has 69k on it and is serviced by vx every year.
just goes to show that things can and do break regardless of how they are looked after.
