I've fitted 3 or 4 Head units to VX cars including a d/din unit to my late vec-c and it made no difference to the clock functions, they still worked fine. I remember you do have to add a second wire on most head units when fitting to VX vehicles, but I think that was only to apply the 12v power for memory backup of the unit, should not really affect the working of the clock, though the display may not show track playing info depending on the unit that's been fitted.

Ah... just re-read your post... do you mean with no head unit fitted at all. ? in which case, no idea...lol never tried it.

you can only set the clock by putting in your original cd30 as the clock is set by the rds signal on the radio or get aftermarket steering controls like i did and you can set the clock via that , well you can with the cd70 anyway, hope that helps mate

I have the same problem, though I can't set the clock using the steering controls as my little box of tricks is actually for a Mk5 Astra.

here is a simple way to solve your problem

remove your display in the day. at midnight go out to your car plug the screen in and hey presto, time starts at 00.00

rebuild the dash the next day in the light
