    Default Oil and mayonnaise

I was checking the oil on mother in laws car today and noticed some white gunk around the oil filler cap. First thought was 'head gasket', but the car doesn't lose coolant or overheat and drives normally.

Can condensation cause this or should she be worried? The car is used daily and covers reasonable mileage, so no short, stop-start journeys.

My car does this if you do short journeys but it clears when you drive it for approx 15/20 miles. Dont think its something you have to worry about. Just pull out the dipstick if the oil on that looks okay then it should be fine.

I checked the wifes corsa yesterday and saw the same thing around the filler cap - BUT no oil leak, no smoke, no coolant leak and Oil looks reasonably healthy on the dip-stick.

I put it down to a dodgy cap letting moisture in, as like you say, the car runs fine daily

Yes - moisture in the PCV system causes this, especically when cold and not been on a long hot run...

Give it a damm good thrashing up a dual carridgeway (no more than 70MPH please ) and get the engine nice and hot - will go..

It's just likely to be moisture Paul, and will be more likely to form if the car doesn't get driven at operating temperature for a reasonable length of time. A nice long run will help but if the car doesn't get those then you may want to consider slightly more regular oil changes.

Unless there is any other problem with the engine. I would say it is due to short journey,s. Both my Vectra and Larisa,s Vectra get this "gunge" in the engine. I have removed the oil filler pipe and put the oil filler cap in it,s place. That cured the problem. On Larisa,s there is an oil separator fitted. But I have to clean it out from time to time as it get full of this mayonase stuff. A good blast on the motorway will soon shift it for a while.

Don't you know Hellmans use old 8v Vauxhall engines on short trips to produce the world's supply of mayo?!?
