Default Help us choose an MP3 player please!

    Right,

Decided it is time to invest in an iPod or iPod equivilant. So what do people recommend, I dont like paying for big brand names, as there is so little to go wrong with an MP3 player. Key characteristics, 20Gb and track text. Other than that I'm open to suggestions.

Are you planning on using it the car?

It's an obvious suggestion, but the iPod is the easiest to use (click wheel is a work of genius) and is the one most accessories are made for. Do Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood etc make an iRiver adaptor?

    I rest my case, m'lud!

The choice for my daughter's MP3 player depending on two things, according to her!. Memory - She 'needed' (yer right!) over 15GB, not really as she only had about 7GB of music and most of that was duplicates!!! (pruned down to 5GB) Her other reason - It had to be an iPod, why?, 'cause that is what everyone else had! (yer right! AGAIN)

Now I am not opposed to APPLE because they don't have enough buttons on their mice, but she would never use iTunes as you have to pay for that, she uses Peer2peer 'backup' software and all her music is obtained from the internet... or what me and my wife purchase for ourselves or her

So finally decided on one of those new Sony 20GB PURPLE coloured MP3 players, it's got the text on an OLED screen, not colour, but he mate's think it's great... PHEW!!!

Sorry Simonali, but she is not old to drive, so the car option never came into this decision - I also rest my case m'lud

Itunes is actually free -doesn't cost a penny.
The music store is where the money goes!
I've been using a 60Gb Colour iPod for a while now, and it does what I need it to.
The only drawbacks I've found seem to be battery life (not bad, but never as god as you hope), and the fact that it doesn't have a digital output, for connecting to my home stereo. Oh, and it's quite heavy.

absolutely spot on!! got me an iriver and i think it's superb, whoops the ipods by a mile in my opinion.

only drawback is as simonali said, that the manufacturers don't make any in-car accessories for them!!

I tried an iRiver H10, nice machine but connectivity glitches with Windows Media Player. No e-mail reply from iRiver whatsoever & its a well-known problem. Sent it back in disgust as it didn't do what it said on the Tin. Believe its a problem with certain Windows XP computers but will sync ok on other machines. Currently have an iAudio X5L with the extended life battery. This is a great player. A tad heavy due to the battery (<35 hrs) but will convert from analogue sources and won't put any copywrite sh*t on to the recording like the Sony's. Did consider a Sony Minidisc recorder as they can go up to 1G per disc, but was put off by DRM and thats on your own recordings. I use WMA & MP3 codecs and find even WMA at 64kbps is acceptable, but then at my age............ You will find that manufacturers are in set gangs. Sony stick to Atrac3, Apple (iPod) to AAC, and the Microsoft gang to WMA. Have fun looking into all different TLA's. I spent weeks researching it all. At the end of the day I didn't like white/iPod and didn't want to run with the Herd.

dont worry about having enough memory, i have a little 512mb mp3 player and i currently have 40 albums (remember them!!) on it due to a lttle program called mp3 diet, it basically compresses the mp3 files down to next to nothing
25mb down to 50 kb and music quality is the same.
