Default Number plates on or off?

So I used a bit of my spare time this weekend to wash the car (two buckets - how very obvious, but still took this forum to point it out to me) and to vacuum the interior. Now thats as far as I can go at the mo being a bit too "financially challenged" to buy clay, wax and polish.

However the car looks sooo much better; but what really bugged me as I sat and watched the footie this afternoon was I could notice a bit of dirt peeking out from underneath the rear number plate.

So I'm going to ask - does everyone else take their plates off?
And are there any obvious, (but not so obvoius I've worked it out already) and simple ways of cleaning the metal on the inside of the doors and boot?

You should've seen the look my wife gave me when I said I was thinking of removing the plates before washing it next week - perhaps I won't mention debadging it either...

oh dear BoroDave, already you`ve fallen into the pool of vectraism, yes by all means take off the plates providing they`re not stuck on, i`m certain it will be a once only job, but then its into the hallowed grounds of the `detailing` section and that is when we all go paranoid about a small minute particle of dirt daring to attatch itself to the glorious veccy, and the sleepless nights of which cleaning product to buy next and then to try a different wax that has given a deeper gloss, welcome my friend welcome

Get in! I haven't gone completely nuts then!
They're defo not stuck on. Screwed in and not perfectly straight either, which has been bugging me every day for six months, but to align them straight means another hole in the plate which I know will be visible, even if only to me
