Just make sure the basic stuff is ok mate, like your lights (reversing lights aren't testable, neither is the n/s fog light). Check your tyres are up to scratch (1.6mm and free of deep cuts etc). Are your pads and discs ok (pads not below 1mm and discs not excessively pitted and worn). Make sure the car isn't minging either because if the tester can't see components for muck, he may refuse to test it. There will be a lot you can't check yourself but you can make things easy for yourself by at least checking the things you can see. HTH mate

how worn would you say a disc would be for a fail as mine have a fair groove round the outside of them or would it be advisable to change them anyway

In my experience as long as the brakes pass the efficiency test thats OK. I have had advisories for disc wear and corrosion but no fail. I have done jobs in preparation for MOTs which on reflection I wonder if they actually needed doing or just me being fussy. Best check the basics and wait for the test result. HTH

You should be ok, they have to be pretty bad to fail

That is not always the case. You could have brilliant brake efficiency, but if I decide that a disc(s) are excessively pitted, I will fail it, because it says in the testers manual that excessive pitting is a reason for rejection, not because I am a barsteward lol
