    Default Excel and Vista

Hi there. I just purchased a laptop with Vista installed in it. However, when i try and open excel , powerpoint, word or a pdf file, nothing seems compatible.
So whats the deal with this?
Do i need to buy ms office?
Or can i add on something from Windows?

    Any help is much appreciated.

Does it have Office installed on it...? If not, do a search for 'open office', it's an open source version which handles Office files but is totally free. Other options include using Google's own applications and storing the documents online...
