Not a bad camera, a bit low on the megapixels (6) IMO, as for a guide price I would say around £200.

I would have a look at a Canon 400D also, 10 megapixels and can be had for around the same price if your lucky(maybe slightly more though).

Wot he said £150 tops as if he traded in for an upgrade he would struggle for £100.

If you have the money and want a Nikon then consider the 40X slightly more Mpxl. I have a Canon 450D and if enlarging it does make a difference, that said any nikon is good.

I have used Nikons for several years up to and including the top pro film camera the F5. Having switched to digital again with Nikon and have had a couple of versions I think that they are a good solid camers which will stand up against any other top brand make allowing that the mega pixals are the same. They will not let you down if treated with the respect that a peice of digital equipment requires.

Im using a Nikon D40X, the 10.8mp version of the D40.
I've got the standard 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm Sigma lens.
It's a very nice compact DSLR; the only real advantage ive seen over the Canon 400D is it has a metal/alloy lense mount where the Canon is plastic (and could potentially break if dropped).

Nikon DSLR's also tend to take much warmer/vibrant images, where Canon's tend to be quite cold but more realistic.

The only thing I will say is make sure you invest in some lens and sensor cleaning bits (blower+wipes) as the D40's seem to collect dust on the sensor (a real pain).

The D40 is a good starter to get into SLR. Look at the completed listings on Ebay for a guide price.

I don't know why everyone still goes on about megapixels, I would rather decent glass.

Indeed, unless you intend to print a billboard size photo, you'll never see the difference.
But unfortunately for selling photo's to advertising companies/magazines/etc you need to be at 16mp or higher, which means either buying a top DSLR or resizing up

Oh and back to OP, get a good tripod... You'll definitely need it if it's your first DSLR, camera shake is soooo frustrating when your first starting out.
