    confused Winter/Summer tyres

    What's the difference?

Just been reading my August 2003 edition of the Vectra owners manual and on page 268 it says "Tyres of size 215/50 R 17, 225/45 R 18 or 235/35 R 19 may not be used as winter tyres (M+S tyres)."

Why can't they be used as winter tyres?

And what does M+S mean? I didn't know that Marks and Spencer sold tyres.

I am a bit thick, but does it mean that in the winter I have to remove my 215/50 R 17 tyres and wheels and convert the Veccy to a tracked vehicle like on a bulldozer?

Maybe that's where Woolworths went wrong, they should have diversified and cornered the market in tyres that you can use in both the summer and winter to save us having to swap winter tyres for summer ones and vice versa every six months.

    I need counselling.

Did a quick google on this, as I didn't know either, aapparently M & S means Mud and Snow tyres.

    See: http://www.etyres.co.uk/glossary-tyre-terms?term=ms

M+S is mud and snow. Winter tyres have sharp "sipes" in the tread that bite in to ice, and are also a different compount of rubber that works below 7C. Normal summer tyres which most people in the UK use all year don't work well below 7C due to the rubber compound not reacting with the road surface.

Winter tyres don't work well the wider they are - generally in countries that have mandatory winter tyre use, people have a spare set of wheels for winter. 19" in the summer, 15" or 16" in the winter.

Here's some info about winter tyres:
