Default Duplicate photo file removal tools

I have done several attempts at transfering all our photos onto an external hard drive. However the good wife was so paranoid about loosing ANY photos that she wouldn't let me delete any files until the transfers were complete. However, as this was a long process I never finished and we now have several copies of the same photos on two hard drives.

Basically we have around 5000 photos, duplicated 3 times makes 20,000 files. I want to review these files and remove all the duplicates. Then I can sort the structure out. The quick way would be to compare file names and bin the duplicates, However I have noticed that we have some files with the same name but are different photos from different cameras.

I have done a Google search for applications/tools to help me with this, but there are so many I don't know which to trust. I haven't found any threads here either....

    I was thinking of this:

    Any recommendations?

Cant you go into the folder and use the icon that allows you to sort by List, and then date modified / sort by name and then delete all the ones that say " copy "

There aren't any called "copy", They are duplicates in different folders with the same file names.

Are they all photos that have been taken with a digital camera? If so you could rename the pictures using the exif info, that would make sorting them easier..

    Thanks Lofty,

Basically the C: drive is full, 70% is Photos. So I gets me an External Drive (X: drive).

I started copying the photos over and the missus says can you stop that and deal with this or what ever, so I stopped, Then a few weeks later I start again, but can't remember were I was up to so start again and yep, she says, can you stop that.....

In between I find out she has added more photos to the C: Drive While I have been adding mine to the X: Drive So I haven't a clue what is were now. I did a search to count the number of JPGs......16,000 on the X drive...Add the RAW

I think there are around 9000 on the C: drive as well!

You want to get a free copy of "Duplicate Cleaner" by Digital Volcano, it checks for duplicates by file name, file content (CRC), date and file size.
