Default steering wheel radio controls - replaceable?

the radio volume thumbwheel is a bit worn on my car, more so than you would expect for a 40000 miles car. i was wondering if you can replace the wheel bit, or the whole wheel and 2 button unit, or if these bits are available at all. has anyone else had this problem? what did you do about it? can you find these parts? what's the job itself like??

i saw some on e bay too - the radio volume one looked more worn than my one! in fact, i think they may have been for sale in the parts section on here. he may have sourced replacements from a scrappy though for all i know.

what do you do? unscrew them? i can feel a hole in the back of the wheel spokes - is there a retaining screw there? and then what? do they plug in or a solder job?
