Default It appears its a common fault

seems like I have a common problem

AA man towed me to the dealership on Saturday after a series of problem, starting with low power, then then spanner light, then the EML, finally the engine stopped

AA man said it was the DPF (from his laptop running T2)

Monday, the dealership says "absolutely not the DPF, its the EGR valve". Obviously they haven't got one in stock, nor VX Uk apparently, no date given for one, on "back order" he says. I managed to find one within 15 minutes on the shelf with an ebay shop!

Surprise surprise, the dealership yesterday afternoon "we've fitted the EGR valve but its showing an DPF fault code now" "£1200 please and we haven't got one in stock"

Is it likely that it is the DPF or is it more likely the inlet manifold please?
Also is a DPF fitted on a 120 07 plate as I've found one is with a breaker/salvage

    Many thanks for any help

a dpf on a 120 is diferent i belive ...they have pipes fitted to them and can have either 1 or 2 pipes .but ask a dealer to check if there the same but a 2nd hand dpf maybe worse than the one you have

usually the dpf blocks up and causes a fault due to the egr valve being stuck slightly open causing the dpf to clog quickly. deffinetly would'nt advise fitting a secondhand dpf, it will more than likely be as bad as the one you remove..... if you do get secondhand it will need a static regeneration done at vx and then resetting in the ecu with tech 2..... if its not already to blocked!!

Last year I had my Signum in for a new alternator and had a new dpf fitted at the same time. The stealer said it was done under a recall.

OK - what's a DPF and an EGR valve?

The DPF is a diesel particulate filter which burns off the soot in the exhaust. The EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation valve. Ther is an excellent guide on how to remove and clean it. Just search on EGR and you should find it no problem.

changed the EGR ok, but the DPF won't regenerate either active or static so I've ordered a new one (can't find the right spec secondhand), the service tech said its ok on short low speed journeys so I'm using it to and from work until the part arrives

but a strange thing happened today (nearly as strange as one of my threads disappearring the other day )

started off from home, 5 minutes down the road the spanner light came on as per usual, down to limp-home 3k rev mode

stopped car, turned it off and back on again to reset, now normally I have to do this about 4 times, or just drive in at 40mph on limp-home mode

this morning the spanner light didn't come back on until I arrived, perhaps another 25 minutes

is the DPF slowly regenerating or is it wishful thinking?!

id put my money on stuck swirl valves. If its low power at low revs and excessive smoke at low revs its stuck open. If its low power at high revs and more smoke at high revs its stuck closed. Related to EGR valve cause it gets clogged if EGR is very dirty or stuck open.
No need to replace an EGR valve - usually frees up when cleaned. Swirl valves cannot be changed without a new inlet manifold.
