    Default Rip Off Britain....

As some may know, I purchased a little Vauxhall Astra runabout whilst I am sorting out my finances.

Put it in for its MOT recently and it failed. Garage initially quoted me £200 to fix the problem with a free retest..

I rejected it, asked for an alternative option which there was and was requoted £100.

So I walked away... shopped around and got the job done for.....

£34.62 inc VAT, fitting, everything ! - car passed its MOT (a saving of £165.38 off the original quote)

    Yesterday....

A friend of mine called me as her car failed its MOT as well. The garage quoted her £345 to fix the car and a free retest

I shopped around and got another quote....

£130 inc VAT, Fitting, everything (a saving of £215 off the original quote)

They ask for it in the hope that you say Yes and get it done there and then.

I have a clear understanding with the place I MOT my cars at, if it fails I will be doing the work myself and having a free retest within 14 days. I have used the same place for several years and that's the deal.

Good point, was applying my girlfriends logic. e.g. stepdaughter needs a new phone, Argos has one for £43. We have £30 in vouchers so she says but it will only cost us £13.

Well, it failed on the 'condition of exhaust' (the baffles were rattling in the back box)

So the MOT Test Centre suggested they fit a stainless steel backbox to the car for £200

I explained that the car only cost me £400 in the first place and was there an alternative...

They then requoted for a standard steel backbox at £100 which I rejected due to cost.

I found a local independant garage round the corner who quoted £34.62 all in... and they had it in stock and were able to do the job straight away.

I took it back to the MOT centre who charged me an extra £10 for a retest... all they did was stick the key in the ignition turned the engine on to see if the box rattled... and then passed the car ..he just walked straight back in, gave me the keys back and charged me £10

I was a little shocked to say the least... but happy that it had passed for £34

I thought they had to re-test the whole car by law? I may be wrong. Maybe its different if you get it done the same day.
