Default Question about that Service light/icon?

I have just brought my first Signum '05 plate 1.9 CDTi 150 Elegance and I have a qestion about the Service light.

Everytime I start the car from cold the service icon (the picture of the car with a spanner through it) comes on and will stay on for 2 - 3 minutes, then it will go out. I think it is because the car is cold because when I turn the engine off and on again the light will go out almost as soon as it comes on.

Can anyone tell me what is going on? Do I need a service already as the last one in the book before I brought it was September.

Thanks for your help in advance!

If you need a service the service message comes up where the speedo / mileage is. The car with a spanner on the left is the engine management light I think. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Unless it had a service by VX a lot of garages dont know how to or cant reset the service indicator.

Would a reset be needed in this case? Like I said, the light will go out after a few minutes and if the engine is warm it will go out almost straight away? I'm no expert by any stretch but that doesn't seem like a reset is needed? If a reset was needed wouldn't the light stay on all the time?

If its the "Car and Spanner" thats a Engine Management light, NOT the service indicator. That will require a visit to VX or to someone with a code reader. The Service indicator 4 letters, I think "INSP", this displays on start up in the millage display in the speedo.

The light you describe (car/spanner) is the Engine Management Light. as it is going off after a few seconds it is telling you that a fault code is stored in memory.

The light should reset itself after a set number (40?) of successful restarts; unless the fault recurs in that time. You could get the stored code read on a code reader (might not pick up the code) or take it to someone with Tech2 (Vx).

If the light fails to go out, get it to a garage for the fault code to be read, a light constantly on indicates a current fault.

The service light is an oilcan with a spanner. There are a few threads on how to reset this light on the forum.

    EDIT - beaten to it.

Isn't the oil can and spanner a oil change or oil pressure problem? Meaning a Ecotech service is required or something?

yes - oilcan with spanner is service light (either it needs one or the numptys at the garage didn't reset it!)

EML is car with spanner - fault present (on constant) or previous fault stored (goes off a few seconds after car starts)

Right! After some digging and searching on this forum (should have tried harder the first time!) It looks like it is probably a glow plug that is the issue. I will post when I have confirmed this and hopefully resolved it too!

Rainbow6six - where in the SE are you? If you're in my neck of the woods I could hook up my diagnostic kit to your car and see what fault codes you have etc.
