Default Rant #2 of today - Patriotic insults

Mark's post about his truck thing this morning got me thinking about an irrational pet hate I have. [This is no reflection on Mark btw - his post simply acted as the catalyst for my thoughts on this issue and ultimately each to his/her own].

Just a personal thing I know, but I must confess I find the increasing use of the middle finger "salute" in modern Britain very annoying. It's yet another imported americanism we could well do without IMO. We already have a perfectly serviceable form of visual insult which is far less graphic but infers a similar connotation, which has served us well for hundreds of years.

Whatever happened to the good old English two fingered gesticulation? I'm not encouraging its use on the road particularly, [I very rarely feel the need to "salute" others myself], and a bit of "Christian motoring" as Capt. Slow might say makes for a safer and less stressful day.

However, it's particularly annoying when some t055er with their head up their rectum carves you up and then in reply to your blast on the horn to alert them to your presence, they flip you the middle finger. The fact that they are the one who screwed up is bad enough, but then to add insult to injury by flipping the bird, instantly makes me want to punch their lights out for being such an ignorant, dangerous, selfish, git. And I have a very long fuse and am generally fairly happy-go-lucky.

It wouldn't be quite so bad if they flicked me the V's. I might even be tempted to simply flick them back rather than harbour a secret desire to eviscerate them with their own keys.....

I'm no right-wing nationalist nut - just a regular bloke who finds the finger exceedingly and unecessarily rude and far less acceptable as a dismissive insult than the good old V sign. So please can we get back to insulting one another using the tried, tested [and more importantly] acceptably British method of telling one another to foxtrot oscar?

    Rant over....

IMO, There are far too many americanisms coming into our everyday life. For some reason that I don't understand it is now becoming fashionable to drop the things that make us different and British, and adopt others mannerisms and language.

Eg our dating system. ie 11 Sep, is now referred to as either 9/11 or Sep 11.

Maybe I'm just too sensitive to it all having worked for an american company for 6 years prior to my current one, and they insisting I adopted their terminology as most other yanks wouldn't understand me otherwise, eg Beta pronounced Bay-ta build prototypes

BTW, your average yank is a bit stupid......

I'm all for that Ste. Especially when it comes to our colonial brethren. I view them a little like a rather slow, dim-witted distant cousin. The more distant the better IYAM!

Apparently, according to CNN [which is an American news network I believe!] inside the United States, "half or fewer of young men and women 18-24 can identify the states of New York or Ohio on a map".

Which basically means that half of the US couldn't find their own @rse with their bare hands.

If that's not an indication of stupidity, I don't know what is.

Additionally, the Journal of Social, Political & Economic Studies even lists a paper on falling US intelligence levels.

So it's official then..... The world is being unofficially policed by a bunch of gun-happy morons. [And I mean that in a nice way ]

    Gawd help us!

[Always go for the cheap gag - even if it's at someone else's expense! ]

Sorry not to follow the typical Yank bashing, but my experience is that they are far more polite, genuine, better educated and thoughtful than the majority of people in the UK.

When I go over there (got family in Georgia), the number of total strangers that make you feel like a long lost friend is amazing. Go onto the average UK estate and you'll see the quality of UK education stood in groups drinking Cider and smoking roll ups.

Cheap xenophobic gags aside, one can generalise about any race/social group. The punt at the septics is like all generalisms, excatly that. A generalism.

I'm sure your reliies and the area they come from, friends colleagues etc etc are all very nice people MLC, and just as I was generalising, [and indeed Ste was too without wishing to put words in his mouth for him!] so were you if I may politely say.

Mucking about aside, I am sure we can all think of examples of groups of people who would fall into either end of the spectrum and all those in between from both sides of the pond.

Personally speaking, as was evidenced by my use of , I was going for the cheap gag.

I still don't like the finger though!

    Cheers

    Phil
