    Default Top book speed

    Are these realistic?

My friend own's a farm, and has a long, long stretch of private road on the farm, so we decided to try out our cars to see what they did.

In the book speed, mine says it does 135mph top speed. It's a 1.9CDTi SRi 150ps model.

However, along the road, mine hit 130mph, and wouldn't budge from there at all. So that's 5mph short of book speed, and probably a lot less on the sat nav, telling the true speed.

His is a Astra SRI 1.9CDTi 150ps, and he only got 120mph, as opposed to the book speed of 129mph.

Is it just down to it needs a service/clean to get it running properly again, or is that all it'll do?

How important is it to achieve the printed top speeds? - Not very IMO.
BUT these are done well before the car is in production and there could be a lot of changes made to the car that affect aerodynamics. Engine power would probably be very similar to the tested car.
Aero's play a huge factor in determining top speed. Have you got alloy wheels for example? - normally the car(s) tested will have discs over the wheels and sealing tape over joints etc to improve aerodynamics, and will use selected parts to maximise the end result. These parts will be within the tolerance band of the component, but will be very carefully selected to give maximum benefits to speeds, mph, emissions etc etc.

Common practice within the automotive industry, and any one who says it isn't doesn't know what they are talking about.

My Vectra is supposed to do 130, but I think you'd need a very long, steep hill with a very strong tail wind to actually achieve that. Anything over a tonne it's struggling.

I've had about 128 indicated on mine, so call it 120. I used to go to a very good test track with the longest straight you've ever seen. Somewhere near Leicester, but I'm not saying anything else about it in case I want / need to go there again....

throw a tuning box on and you can hit the rev limiter in 6th downhill, on the flat and up a slight incline as long as your friends farm track replicates these conditions.

It must be a very long road on a VERY VERY big farm! To hit 130mph and slow down again, the road on his farm must be over a mile long

The Astra 1.9 150 is electronically limted to 4000rpm in 6th gear which equates to 138/139mph. I have proven this on route to Germany last year on the autobahn and sure enough it suddenly stops at 4000rpm.

The Vectra 1.9 150 can quite easily acheive the book figure of 135mph, our members did this with ease on the first Irmscher trip in Germany in 2007.

That sure is a long straight at Bruntingthorpe. Just over a mile and a half isnt it? I did a test day there with a supplier some years ago when I had a real job on car magazines and it was indeed a very long straight!

Is it as long as the one at MIRA though d'you think Ste?

2 mile straight at 60metres wide. Longer than MIRA's.

I was over at MIRA on Monday. Funny to see snow on the circuit and no cars though...
