    Unhappy I fear the worst

went out tonight and when I was almost where I was going, I turned the cd down to hear a bit of what seemed a grinding/knocking noise coming from the engine bay, I pulled over and thought oh poo the camshaft is about to go by the sounds of it! checked the oil and it was fine so I then parked up and got on with what I was supposed to do, when finished I got back to the car started it up and the noise was still there! I then drove up the road about a 100 metres or so to pick my mates up,and turned the car off to open the doors while they got in but when I tried to start it again zilch nada nowt, phoned RAC and on inspection the timing chain has broken, Well miffed on this subject simply because when I had the car serviced last I said you may as well do the timing belt (50,000 miles) on this the reply from the mechanic was " Oh its a 2.2 and its a chain you need'nt bother they never go, save your cash!) now I dread to think what this isgonna cost it could not have come at a worse time! bug**r

To be fair to the mechanic, he gave you correct advice for that engine, if anything was gonna tell tales you would've heard it rattling beforehand and he would've told you if wasn't right, this is a rare case on a DTi assuming it is a Diesel and not a petrol 2.2, they do snap but not normally until they've done well over 120k, and tbh I can't remember ever hearing of a petrol one snap, and if that was on it's way you'd deffo have known it.

Now assuming it is the timing chain that's broken if the car is less than five years old you might be able to get VX assistance repairing it, generally under four years is the most age VX will accept when helping, but it's not unknown for them to help in special cases, you will need to prove it's been properly serviced though and they will want to inspect the parts so don't pull anything off it just yet until you've spoken to VX, don't bother the dealer, go straight to customer services, be polite and explain what's happened, they will then tell you how and if they can help. hth.

Since Vauxhall put the 3 year warranty on their cars, most good will after three years has been withdrawn. But to be fair it has been know to happen.

Monkeyhinger, you havent said which engine you have? Petrol or Diesel? If it is the petrol 2.2 and the chain has gone, then it's a throw away and start again.

When you say nothing happened when you cranked, ie no starter movement? That doesn't sound like chain failure to me. If the car was running a few seconds earlier and you switched off and it wouldn't restart? _ does it crank at all?

    I'm confused.

The easiest way to check for belt / chain failure is to take the oil filler cap off and get someone to crank the engine over. You can see the camshaft through the oil filler aperture, if it's rotating with the engine, then the belt / chain isn't snapped.

Just cos the RAC say it, doesn't necessarily make it so.
