Most passenger jets that travel over water for long periods are capable of landing on water, as they carry extra liferafts etc for this eventuality. It takes exceptional skill to do it though!

Airports across the world have crashes everyday. They are controlled crashes otherwise known as safe landings!!

Whether it crashed or landed on water (I prefer the landed on water tbh because it was a controlled event) I dare bet the people on it don't care what terminology others use.
to be honest a landing on water is the hardest to do and the most dangerous as it only needs a slight wave or breeze and the airplane flips

A crash is when you total it and lose control and aircraft destroyed with lives lost!.

The aircraft may be f***ked, but everyone alive, aircraft in one piece, definitely a landing IMO.

I think having a plane with no power is going to be a crash if he can't make a runway no matter how you look at it. It's only the pilot's superb skill that it "landed" without breaking up- and a water landing is the hardest of them all. If it had had a poor pilot it would have broken up so would that have been a landing as well-just in bits?

The pilot did a TV interview yesterday.

He'll probably get some sort of commendation now

In honesty I think he deserves it too. A lot more than some of the people who seem to extract them from their cereal box on a morning.

The calm voice is just part of the training. Any pilot that starts squeaking or yelling in a crisis won't be a pilot for long. Remember Apollo 13? "Houston, we have a problem" -which translates as, "We're 100,000 miles from home, our spacecraft has blown up, we think we're going to die and we're bricking it"
Not taking anything away from the guy, though -to get a big plane down on water in one piece is a hell of an achievement.
