Default First proper car - vectra or astra?

Basically, I have just passed my test and am looking for a car. I am currently driving my mum's 2003 1.2 Corsa which is a very nice car, but I need something bigger.

Firstly, I would like to say that I am NOT looking for a rocket car that will go extremely fast, nor will I drive my car fast on public roads. Speed limits are there for a reason...

    I am looking at either a 2000 Vectra 1.8 SXI, or a 2000 1.6 Astra SXI.

I like the SXI models because I think they look better, but mainly because the interiors are of higher quality than the standard models.

I am looking to spend up to £2,000.

Insurance is NOT a big issue, I am fortunate to live in a good area where crime is low, the car will be in a locked garage overnight, and I have a large sum of money saved up from jobs to find the car.

What experiences / opinions do you have on these cars? Any input at all would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I loved my Vec B, but those Astras are also nice too.

Difficult choice. If you don't need soooo much space, I'd go for the Astra, they're still roomy cars.

I posted a question on Yahoo Answers, and was referred here. I was told you would be helpful!!

Thank you for all the input though!!

There is also the option of saving a bit more and going for a Vectra-C with a 1.8 petrol or 1.9 CDTi but I thought a car like that would be a bit too big since I am relatively new to driving on the road? What do you think?

Personally as a 1st time driver you want something smaller, Astra is a good motor i had an Astra before the Vectra and would suggest one of those.

Im on the Vec-C site with a Vec-B?? TBH, im also on vvoc, but the advice you get on here, even about non Vec-C's, is second to none!!!

I have had a Vec B and C as with most other's, and have also had an Astra G (mk4) SXI.....the Astra was a fantastic car and was one of my boy'ish day car's....as a 1st car-go with this. Not so sure about the 1.8 engine though....might be a little hefty on the insurance? I had a 1.6 SXI but the Facelift one and that was miles cheaper than the 1.8!

Roll with the Astra G IMHO!!!

    HTH!

    Bye bye Vec B
