    Default Photography help

Just a question for all you photogrophers that can help me.

How do you set things in the foreground to foucus and things is the background to blur out as such?

I know it will vary from camera to camera but a little help would be nice.

I also know the different letters on the top do diffrent things, i have :-
    Auto, SP, P, S, A and M

My camera is a Fujifilm S602Zoom Finepix if this also helps?

    Cheers Matt

Set to Av mode and select the lowest number possible probably f4. Also try zooming in all the way.

To be honest mate, you'll have a hard time doing it unless you're fully zoomed in and close to the subject.

SLRs are the only way to get good results really, as the important factor is the physical size of the cameras imaging sensor. Most compact cameras have a sensor which is much too small to give the results you're after...

So on your camera it sounds like it's the A mode. Set an aperture with a smaller number and it'll chose a shutter speed accordingly. Depending on the subject you may want to make the aperture not the smallest number but a few clicks larger (number) i.e. smaller aperture. If it's a car?, then you'll probably not want to chose the smallest number as you'll end up with parts of the car going soft - depending if you want that or not. Just experiment with different aperture setting in the A mode and see what works best for what you're trying to achieve.

If you stand a good distance back and zoom in with a longer focal length then you'll get that effect more easily.

DNS, it is still easily achievable to get that effect even with a compact camera, you just need to work a bit harder/smarter to overcome things like having small sensors etc.

If you have a device called "focus lock" (see manual) it is easy. Foucus on the subject, it would have to be considerably closer than the background to achive the effect, lock your focus and press release button. There are also several other factors involved in creating this effect, aperture size, focal distance and lens focal lenght which all can be employed once you are totaly at home with you camera and the technology involved. Read the manual fully as most folk tend to not bother and lose the full use of the camera. As Steve 19751 said set to AV (aperture priority, A on you camera) and widest setting, lowest number.
