    Default 2.0T Engine problems...?

Just driving home from London and the car just lost all power!

The car had been sitting for a week as I was working nights, so this morning cleared all the snow and ice and gave her a quick 15 min drive to warm her up, clear the windows fully etc. Then went back to work for 2 hours and then set off at 6.

Driving along, she was fine, then it came to the motorway, no problems joining etc. Went to over take a slow lorry... Nothing! The engine just lost power, it was running, but wouldnt go above 2k revs / 60mph. (Limp mode???)

So I pulled over at the next services and the spanner light was on. So gave her a 5 minute rest and started her up again.

The light had gone out but the turbo wouldnt kick in. So had a nice slow drive home. Came off the motorway and the turbo started working again!

So now she's working fine (I think), but I think the Turbo is a bit louder than normal... really loud spin up/whistle sound.

So I'm wondering, would a split pipe on the turbo cause this problem?

The turbo's died before, but she's never had the spanner light pop up.

What should I look for guys? I've searched for ideas, but there's not much for the 2.0T engine, only the diesels...

    Cheers,

If the spanners gone out, is there any point in me taking it to VX and paying out for a "No fault found Sir..." Would the code have been erased?

The spanner fault should be logged on the computer mate the ecu will store it

It all depends what the fault was, but if the spanner light has come on then there 'should' still be a fault code stored, even if the spanner light has gone off.

Yep, 'cos there's not been any common problems associated with the 2.0T, other than the aux belt getting twittery/squeaking.

Odd that it wouldn't rev past 2k. As you've probably seen, I had a little issue with my turbo way back due to the wastegate disc detaching from the arm, but the car still revved normally - I just had not boost.

If it's working now then maybe one to just keep an eye on, although the codes would be handy. If you were closer I'd have done it for you.

I just went through some 'basic' checks and looked at the oil... Its a VERY dirty colour... I only checked it 3-4 weeks ago and it was a goldish brown tint... now it just looks dark and horrible. She's not due a service or MOT until June, guess I should probably get her looked at soonest.

Off this topic... What does -

"Slight play in steering rack tie rods. Play in both rear upper suspension arms"

Are these going to hit my wallet hard? LOL

DOH! There was no fault code stored and they seem to think there's no splits and my Turbo's fine... How loud should the turbo be on spin up anyway!?

Might be worth just doing an oil/filter change - always good to keep the oil tip-top in a turbo engine.

Not too drastic and even less ££ if you DIY. The rear ones sounds like they mean the upper control arms - £70 a pair from LMF and easy job (How 2 on here). Tie rods - not sure on price but again not a huge job.
