confused When did GM buy Ford then???

Both Ford and Vauxhall, which is owned by General Motors, are also benefiting from the US Congress's $14bn (£9.8bn) bail-out of the car industry.

It states Vx is owned by GM. If it meant Ford and Vx, it would read:

Both Ford and Vauxhall, which are owned by General Motors, are also benefiting from the US Congress's $14bn (£9.8bn) bail-out of the car industry.

No, you've read it wrongly. The article says "Both Ford and Vauxhall, which is owned by General Motors, are also benefiting..."

So it's singular and referring to Vx being owned by GM.

EDIT: Beaten to it! Here endith today's English lesson.

I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with the grammer as such. It's got the comma correctly positioned and is using the singular term which will apply to the last company mentioned.

EDIT: However maybe a neater way would have been "Vauxhall, which is owned by General Motors, and Ford are both benefiting....."

    Wink

    - Good job it reads nice and clear and couldn't possibly be interpreted in a a way that might effect the global markets in these rock steady economic times.

I`m glad Angel boy mis-read this. I was thinking of buying a Ford next and I don`t want cheap, SORRY EXPENSIVE, unreliable GM parts on it.
