Not a biggy in plane terms..... I understand Gatwicks open but it shows that with the best will in the world and a good pilot things can still happern.

Perhaps that will make passengers keep seated with belts fastened until the gate. Probably not.

21st centuary and a bit of snow causes chaos. Surely they can come up with someway of keeping the runways clear.

It isn't just the runways that need to be kept clear its the taxiways too and the small matter of aircraft minimas which basically limits aircrafts ability to land or takeoff due to visability and the knockon effect is the airports become jammed with aircraft. Cardiff was busy today with diversions from other airports. Not all airlines pay the extra money for fully equipted Category 3 (blind landing) aircraft or the crews that go with them hence them being grounded. To clear a 3 mile 60 metre strip of tarmac takes about 3 1/2 hours that slows down the aircraft substantially as well and the slush that is left from de-iced snow also needs to be cleared regularly. To clear all taxiways and runways at Heathrow takes approximately 8 hours and it causes chaos in the meantime. The snowbase at Heathrow and the other airports do a fantastic job and all power to them.
