    Default Running in?

    Hi

I am nearly sixty and come from an age when we had stickers on the back saying 'Running in please pass' I have just bought my first new car for years which is a 1.9 diesel Vectra and whilst I realise cars nowadays do not require 'running in' anymore I have question.

The owners manual states don't labour engine and for the first 600 miles only use 3/4 throttle. Could you wise people on here tell me if possible what revs I can safely take it up to within this 3/4 range? Top revs is 5k so would it be about 3.5k or lower?

Also after 600 miles can I drive her normally or should I build it up to max over a period of time?

It was a lot easier years ago as the books used to say

    first 300 miles = 30mph

    300 - 1000 miles = 45mph

    1000 - 5000 miles = 65mph

Thank god things have changed since then

By the way nearly sixty but not a pipe and slippers man just yet

    Thanks for any help

Drive the car the way you will do during it's life. If you treat a new engine, especially a diesel too easily you can risk shining up the cylinder bores, leading to poor performance and oil use in it's later life.

The old saying goes "nothing goes like a rental" - that's because they're driven hard from new.

Hi & welcome to Vectra-C.com good to have another 'hog' on board. In my opinion just drive the car normally as the mileage creeps up you will feel it loosing up just go for it & enjoy. Follow the handbook relating to checks & service for your guaranty.

Welcome to the site. There seems little need now a days. To run your motor in. Like they did in the old days.

I don't think there is any real need to make a conscious effort any more, I wouldn't go thrashing it though for the first couple of weeks.

I once has a brand new hire car, it had only had about 12 miles on the clock when it was delivered to my house, the next morning (fairly cold too) it got redlined before the end of the street and thrashed. After a couple of hundred miles it has really loosened up and was far more free revving.

Oh, and I laboured it too, just for good measure. I only had it for the day for a trip down to Guildford and back, and gave it back to National.....
