petrol - prob 1.8. Short town journeys will kill a diesel unless it is continually running, like say a taxi.
The differences in buying and maintenance cost are almost inexistent here. In other words, all the stuff that ahs to be imported is so heavily taxed they're equally expensive, actually.
But owning a diesel, I fill up the tank only twice a month. Every people I know owning petrol cars fill up their tank from every week to twice a week, depending on the car.
Add then the fact that gas-oil is about 25% cheaper than petrol (for the only reason it's less heavily taxed, because it was primarily aimed at tractors, buses and trucks), and you'll understand there's even nothing to discuss at all.
Some years ago, when my wife went from a petrol Renault 19 to a diesel Renault 21 Estate (7 seats, because of the 4 children), she paid the new car with only the difference in gas cost (it was actually as if she had the car for free). Both were used cars, of course.
I know some small and light petrol cars can have a very reasonable consumption, but it's generally not the case for heavy cars such as the Vectra, so I'd be surprised it would be cheaper overall. Not even talking about heavier cars such as the Holden Commodore. A lot of Australians have been waiting for a diesel Commodore for ages... Considering the distances they drive, it would be excessively advantageous.
My wife uses our 1.8 petrol for short town journeys and I can say this: petrol or diesel consumption of this kind of driving should be your driving factor and its expensive! Get a smaller petrol, 1.2 or 1.4 will be more economical.
There's still an engine torque to car weight ratio to take into account.
My company bought a Suzuki Alto for the salesman, for short town trips, and it had an abysmal consumption, something you'd never believe unless you've seen it.
Was I talking about petrol cars sucking twice as much as my Veccy ? Well, this one sucked FOUR times as much petrol ! And at the +25% petrol expense over fuel, of course. 3 cylinders ****ty engine with no torque at all forces the driver to get heavy on the pedal all the time. The result is no surprise. The damn thing has been sold ASAP (and it wasn't easy : we had to wait it was amortized in accounting so we could sell it cheap. And the buyer HAS to be a pigeon).
I have a Petrol 1.8, £30 lasts me practically an entire week.
There is a lot of factors to take under consideration in fuel consumption. I know I usually get around 600 miles from a full tank of mix driving, both motorway and driving around busy city, in various conditions. So far I've spend £418 on fuel and covered 2944 miles according to aCar app and I am pretty happy about it. I have '56 reg 1.9 TDI SRI [150].
I get around 650 km (400 miles) from a full tank in tonw driving (with short lengths of express way, and considering the streets look like San Francisco's (the town is built on a hilly peninsula). The DTi engine is not as fuel efficient as common rail CDTis, but much more than petrol engines anyway.
On road trips, I can drive 1000 km (745 miles) up to the far north and back with a full tank and still drive half a week back in town before having to refuel.
My petrol 1.8 averages 40 mpg or mostly short journeys and town driving but I do drive it gently
