I'm doing about the same from my 1.8 Ecotec as well, normally somewhere between 38.5 to about 41.5mpg which I'm quite pleased with.

I previously had a VW Sharan TDI (R reg) which was quite good on diesel - never below 54mpg and lots on a good run.
Then I bought a newer Ford Galaxy with the PD engine in it - 42-46mpg was the best I got out of that. Dis-appointed!

So considering the Veccy is petrol, what I get to the gallon, and the fact that it's about 6p a litre cheaper, I'm quite chuffed with my new mota!

Any chance of including the Dual Fuels on the list? I'm averaging 29mpg in my 1.8 on LPG at 68.9p a litre... can't get much cheaper

Well, here diesel is 20% cheaper than petrol, and my veccy needs refueling only twice a month, which is half the periodicity for any petrol car I could drive.

The're even no question to ask !

Oh, and This is when driving in town, and accelerating like a savage... This car is sober as a camel !

On the road, I can drive more than 1,200 km without refuelling...

Current fuel prices and a 43mpg to 55mpg average depending on my right foot twitch means I'm still happy in my diesel

Yes, it's obviously a question of consumption rather than fuel price. Even if they put taxes and it was more expensive than petrol, it would still be more interesting ! It would take doubling the price to become a match !!!

Of course I know some small cars with small petrol engines that are rather sober. That is, as long as you drive like a grandma (and not even like mine ) because their engines lack torque so badly they overconsume if you need emergency acceleration.

It can only come with a very small and lightweight car. You know, the kind of car you can hardly squeeze a toothbrush in the so-called "boot" and whose rear seats are meant for dwarves or contorsionists... Things I actually don't even call a car. In my mind, a car is meant to carry lots of people and a bootload of heavy stuff to a distant location as fast as possible. Else I'd rather walk or cycle, it's healthier !

The kind of engine that wouldn't be able to pull a Vectra... There has been some sluggish engines fitted to some Vectras already, and the're quite inappropriate. Torque is what we need, torque will pull a real car with room and load capacity, and in the end, torque will use much less fuel !
