Default Noise from steering rack? Bye bye Vauxhall!

This is the final straw for me personally.....
Has anyone had bother with their steering rack?
To cut a long story short - I've just changed the front drop links on my vectra (sri cdti 55 plate 42000 miles) as i've been getting a slight clunking noise from the driverside at the front when i rock the steering when the car is stationery and when the car is moving.
I've heard a Pinging noise come from the car twice in the past 2 months but thought if it was anything major it would show up when the car went for it's 1st MOT on the 12th of this month. The car passed and there was nothing pointed out as maybe needing looked at.
I would say the noise from the steering has only started in the last week and changing the drop links hasn't solved it. It seems as if the noise is coming from the steering rack but i'm not 100% sure. I'm going to get my mate to check it out at his garage and if it's anything major i'll be parting company with it.
Both the front springs are in 1 piece so nothings broken there i'd say it's coming from the steering rack area.

Has anyone else had similar problems and if so what was it?

Had the very same thing on my 54 Corsa rocked the steering and heard a knocking i also heard it when going over speed bumps, pot holes etc, garage took a look and told me the near side arm was worn. Had the rack changed not a peep out of it now.

There's also a UJ at the bottom of the steering coloumn, these can do that as well.

After having slept on it i've decided to get car checked over and then i'll take it from there. I doubt if i'd get a good trade in price for it with the way things are just now so i'll be getting whatever it is fixed. Hopefully it isn't going to be a sore one though.Whatever it is it's only started making a noise in the last week and it didn't show up during the MOT 2 weeks ago.
Hopefully it's a bush somewhere and not the rack that needs replaced.

    What's a UJ?
I think it's the steering rack how much will this cost me to replace? Would Vauxhall cover it as my 3 year manufacturers warranty expired on the 12th of this month?

    Universal Joint

If your mileage isn't over the 60K then they 'may' contribute with it only just being out of warranty - if indeed the rack is faulty.

From what you've explained though, clunking noises rarely come from the steering rack itself - it's usually other connected parts that do that.

my gf's mum had the same thing on her focus!
was rather annoying! i had a look at the rack.. suspension etc etc. even a few tech's in work had a look too!

Nothing could be found!.. then we found somethin in the glove box. removed it, and the knocking stopped!

So, just a looooooooooooooooooooooooong shot, i know it's not really relevant. but make sure there's nothing loose in the boot or glove box, or ya door cards!

The car's going into a dealers tomorrow too see if they can find what's causing the rattle when i rock/turn the steering.
I asked them for a price to supply and fit a new steering rack just incase this is the problem the reply i got was frightening. £650 for the rack and £250 labour to fit + VAT!
I asked them if they thought it'd be worth while contacting Vauxhall Customer Services and explaining the problem and they said "yes it might be worthwhile". So if it's the rack i'll be on the phone to them straight away, infact if it's something else i'll still be phoning them to see if they'll fix it as a good will jesture. I'll just need to wait and see what they find wrong with the car.

Here's hoping it isn't the rack.
